A friend on the WC:UT forum told us about something on the radio she heard, about spyware and on monday your computer will be shut down. We were a bit confused, and our Admin informed us of this(i'm quoting):
So if you go to this website: www.dns-ok.us, a colored box will appear right when you click it. If the box is green, you're safe and clean without the malware and your computer will not shut down. But if it is RED, it will shut down Monday.
I guarantee this is not a spam or a trick. I wanted to warn you so you guys could be safe. ^.^
I'll explain.
About a year ago, a criminal group in Estonia (I dunno exactly where this country is, sounds European) created a piece of malware that was distributed to roughly 500,000 people worldwide. Around 70,000 of these people reside in the USA.
The malware was designed to change your DNS and redirect you to an altered version of the Internet, in which ads were replaced with malicious ads for fake products. You order the product, send them your money, and they never send it back, that kind of stuff.
The Estonian police caught them and arrested them. An international council of Internet peoples took control of their fake servers that the malware redirects you to and were running them for 1 year, changing them back into the normal internet appearance and removing the malicious ads.
HOWEVER, they plan on only running these servers for a year. Come next Monday, that year will be over and they will shut down the temporary servers. This means if your computer/router are currently affected by the DNS changer malware, you will lose Internet on Monday.
It's easy to see if your computer is infected, just go to www.dns-ok.us. Most people aren't infected and it will tell you that you are perfectly fine. If you ARE infected, though, it will display a red image and tell you what to do to fix it
And that's it. No reason to worry about it, just check to make sure you aren't infected.
