Eh, what the heck? I might as well post a story here.
***Background: There are two clans named DuskClan and DawnClan. The story will mainly follow DuskClan. Recently, cats of both DawnClan and DuskClan formed their new Clan: NightClan. Snowheart, a DuskClan warrior, fell in love with Foxtail, a NightClan warrior. The story begins with Snowheart telling Foxtail about their new kits.***
Snowheart waited at the NightClan border, gazing anxiously into the trees, waiting for Foxtail to emerge. After what felt like an eternity, he finally did. “What was so urgent, Snowheart? Why couldn’t you tell me at the Gathering?”
Snowheart closed her eyes, then whispered, “We have kits. Two of them. Both little she-cats.”
Foxtail was silent, then he murmured, “We have kits… this is great!”
Snowheart’s eyes snapped open. “This is not great! They’re half-clan!”
“So? Nobody has to know!” Foxtail glared defiantly.
Snowheart lashed her tail. “You don’t understand. One looks exactly like me, the other one like you. It would be impossible to keep it a secret.”
“Your clan would have figured it out by now, wouldn’t they? The kits must be at least a moon old, since you came to the Gathering.”
She lowered her face and muttered, “They’re not with DuskClan. I’m hiding them.”
“WHAT?” Foxtail hissed. “You’re hiding them? Where?”
“In a fallen tree, on the outskirts of DuskClan territory. There is not a clan border where they are, and so I have no fear of them being discovered.”
“But you can’t hide them forever! Besides, your clan will realize you’re missing! And they must have known you were expecting kits!”
Snowheart shook her head. “I told nobody, and since I didn’t move to the nursery, I’m hoping they thought I was just eating too much fresh-kill. It is Greenleaf, and prey is abundant. And the kits will not be found, because I will not be missing.”
Foxtail stared in horror. “You’re abandoning them? Your own kits? Our kits?”
“No, not abandoning them. I’m… giving them away.”
“To who? Where? Not anyone in DuskClan, obviously.”
Snowheart sighed. “Nobody in NightClan, either. I was thinking that I would leave them just inside the DawnClan border.”
Foxtail snarled. “We can’t even be sure that DawnClan would take them! And how do you know that they would even be treated harshly for being half-clan?”
“They’re the first half-clan cats to be born in this forest! We can’t take the risk!”
“So, you have a choice: either keep the kits with you, and possibly have them be ridiculed because of their heritage, or give them to DawnClan.”
Snowheart blinked. “There is no choice. I drop them in DawnClan territory tonight! You may come with me to see them if you like.”
Foxtail nodded. “I must meet my daughters before I have to face them as enemies.”
“No,” Snowheart said. “Cloudkit and Rosekit will never be our enemies. Maybe one day, they will know their true parents.”
“They will never even know the names their mother chose for them,” Foxtail murmured. “But perhaps it’s all for the best.”
“It is, I’m sure of it.”
That night, Snowheart stood, watching in the bushes as Cloudkit and Rosekit squirmed on the ground. Cloudkit was named as she was because of the startling white fur, just like her mother’s. Rosekit was named because she always, strangely, smelled faintly of rose. Her fur was bright ginger with a splash of white on her chest, an exact replica of Foxtail.
A late DawnClan patrol padded into sight, and then they stopped, staring.
“Are those kits?” Appleeyes, who had five kits from two litters, was leading the patrol.
“Where did they come from?” Badgerclaw, her mate, walked carefully up to the kits.
“They don’t smell like anything! Except the ginger one smells like roses.” Yellowtail, a young tom, was staring reproachfully at the tiny cats.
“Well, we can’t leave them here,” Badgerclaw mewed. “Appleeyes, do you think Slenderbody would mind nursing these two? She only has one kit, anyways.”
“No, I think she would love that.” Appleeyes walked over and picked up Rosekit.
A young she-cat named Bluestone eyed the kits carefully, then blurted, “Their names are Cloudkit and Rosekit.”
Foxtail and Snowheart gaped at each other.
“How do you know?” Yellowtail questioned his sister.
“I’m not sure. The words just… came out of my mouth. But I’m certain their names are Cloudkit and Rosekit. I just know.” Bluestone nodded.
“Well, Rosekit and Cloudkit it is.” Badgerclaw then retrieved Cloudkit.
“Let’s get them to Slenderbody,” Yellowtail meowed, and the patrol vanished.
“It was a sign from StarClan,” Snowheart muttered.
“You chose the right thing, for the kits’ welfare.” Foxtail touched his muzzle to Snowheart’s.
“I suppose so. I can’t believe I’m their mother, but then, I don’t get the chance to really be their mother.”
“It’s alright. We’ll make it through together.”
Snowheart purred softly. “I don’t care what my clan thinks of me vanishing into the forest in the night. I’m going to stay with you, no matter what.”
Foxtail sighed. “I’m so glad you’re my mate.”
Snowheart agreed. “Us is the one choice I don’t have to make.”
