WARRIORS
One-Shot Competition
One-Shot Competition
Hey there everyone! If you're a bit of an oldie on these boards, then you'll know who I am. And if you're more on the new side, then let me extend a greeting to you. My current screenname is Shadowstalker, but you can just call me by Shad or Shadow. There's not too much to know about me-- I joined this place about four years ago; made a bunch of popular game threads that prompted Admin to make a sub-board for them (yeah, at one point all forum games went into chatting-- imagine that). Did a few walkthroughs. That's about it.
Anywho, yes, in case you were wondering, this was indeed inspired by Snow's writing contest, so loads of credit to her for the idea; although this is not the same thing as her's.
What is a "one-shot", you might ask? A one-shot is a term used by writers (primarily fanfiction authors) to designate a stand-alone writing piece. This typically means it's a story that is encased within a single chapter (though some people might errenously call small multi-chapter stories a one-shot). This means that it has an introduction, a plot, and a conclusion that ties everything up in one published work: a short story that only requires one chapter to tell. That's why it's called a one-shot.
If you're a hobbyist writer like me, then you know that sometimes it's just impossible to work on your project. Whether it be lack of motivation, writer's block, or can't put it into words, it's frustrating. Well, one-shots are a great way to get the creative juices flowing again! They help to stimulate the writer's mind by practicing without long-term commitment that other thing might demand.
Maybe you're new to writing, but are thinking about venturing into the practice. That's great! One-shots are a great way to get started. As already said, they don't require long-term commitment or time.
The goal of this competition is more to encourage people to write than it is to determine who's best, but it is still a challenge, so do your best!
Good luck!
RULES AND GUIDELINES
[ 1 ] Quality of grammar is equal to quality of the story! Nobody wants to read something that looks like it was a text between 9-year-olds. Please use your best language skills-- proper punctuation, capitalization, and spelling add a great deal to your work.
[ 2 ] That being said, you can have impeccable grammar, use huge flourishing vocabulary, and oxford commas, and it will do nothing for you if your story sucks. Put thought into it. Don't cobble it together as a means to show off how well you did in Language Arts. The two things should compliment each other.
[ 3 ] It must take place in the WARRIORS universe. This, I feel, should be obvious.
[ 4 ] Limitations are as follows: a MINIMUM of about 700 words; a MAXIMUM of 5500. (Note: If you go like, 50 words or something over/under the limit, I'll let is slide). To measure how many words your story contains, paste it into a Word document (or similar application).
[ 5 ] The one-shot can star made up characters of your own creation, but CANNOT have made up clans. This means that you can make a cat called Ospreyflight but you can't have them in "SilverClan". It must take place in either ThunderClan, ShadowClan, RiverClan, WindClan, SkyClan, StarClan, the Dark Forest, the Tribe of Rushing Water, or as a rogue/loner/kittypet in the areas of those clans. Your cat can be any rank (queen, kit, warrior, leader, kittypet, etc) and can have any status (dead, alive, dying). It can be at any give era as well (meaning it could take place in the time of Firestar, or way after him, or way before him, anything in between too).
[ 6 ] Please keep it appropriate. A good guideline is whether or not it'd be in the warrior books itself-- for instance, nothing gorier than Tigerstar's death.
[ 7 ] Quality over quantity. Filler sucks.
[ 8 ] When you have completed your one-shot, DO NOT POST IT BELLOW. Send it to me in a private message. If you are a guest, I'll work out another way to do it with you. This is to keep people from plagiarizing each other (whether directly or inadvertently).
So how will judging work?
I'm somewhat of what one might call a judge, but not the final decision maker. Basically, I'll rate each person's submission on three things: grammar, vocabularly, and how well it fit into the guidelines. Three categories, with scoring a possibility of 5 points in each. Afterwards, everyone is to send me a PM containing their own rating of others' submissions. In other words, they'd rate each one-shot with the highest possible score of 10 stars (you are not allowed to rate your own). Once everyone has submitted their ratings to me, I will then combine them with the ratings I gave them based on the earlier categories (vocab, grammar, rules). Whoever has the highest combined score is the winner.
The highest possible combined score one can get will be a 25 (5 for each of the three categories and 10 for the reader rating).
I will post the one-shots for all to read (and rate) on August 8th.
