A light gray she-cat trekked over the broken and shattered leaves of leaf-fall. She looked to the left, then to the right. No one was there. I think it’s clear she thought. As she continued to walk forward, mingled scents of Flashclan and Skullclan lingered in the air with a strong aroma. They must’ve just been here… As she was heading back to her clan from the border she acknowledged the gracious autumn trees that blew in sync in the gentle wind. Prey was as at its absolute best, and the best part was, everything was back to normal, or at least for now. A small bead of water dropped from a tall willow tree onto the gray cat’s whisker, so she quickly shook it off. She bumped into something. “Going somewhere?” A huge dark black tom said sharply. “You should know better not to trespass on Skullclan territory and get away with it. Especially with me around.” The dark cat said, unsheathing his claws. The gray cat sprinted in the other direction, trying an alternate route back to her camp. She slipped on the marshy ground below her toes. Another cat came. It was a muscular tortoiseshell she-cat that smelled of Flashclan. “No one steals from Flashclan!” The two cats surrounded the gray she-cat. Fear sparked in her as she slowly backed away from her towering foes. I knew I should have taken the herbs and left as soon as possible. Now there’s no other choice... The gray cat thought as she unsheathed her claws. Suddenly a sharp pain tugged at her. Oh no! The gray she-cat was giving birth. The black tom drew in closer to get a better look at the gray cat and realized who it was. “Oceanspray?”

Chapter 1, Patrol
A refreshing morning breeze splashed all over the sleeping apprentices, causing the small furball’s to twist and turn in every direction. A small tabby tom arose on his paws and stretched out his body while letting out a large yawn. He looked up at the trees blowing in the gentle wind and decided to wake up his sister Whirlpaw so she too could enjoy the sight. He began to pad over to his sister, carefully stepping over the other apprentices in the den, but then he accidentally slipped on a thin branch. “Look out!” Vortexpaw called out while falling. Whirlpaw got up startled, and dashed out of the way, allowing Vortexpaw to fall flat on his furry face. “Foxdung!” He spat. The other apprentices got up. “Could you be quiet, Vortexpaw? Honestly, you might have woken up all of Starclan.” Whirlpaw said, obviously irritated. The other apprentices let out murmurs of agreement. “Sorry. I just wanted everyone to see how beautiful it is outside.” “Couldn’t that wait?” Whirlpaw said while grooming her long fur. “Besides, I’m sure we might go out on a hunting patrol so-“ Whirlpaw was cut off. “Are all of you still dozing off? Get up already, or else we’ll eat all of the fresh-kill!” Riverleap, Torrentclan’s deputy announced. Vortexpaw and Whirlpaw walked to the fresh-kill pile and picked out a small, but tender rabbit to share together. They sat down in a comfy patch of grass and began to gulp down their meal. A light gray she-cat bounded over towards them. It was Oceanspray. “Hello, Vortexpaw and Whirlpaw. How are you two doing?” She said cheerfully? “Is your fur clean, do you need any more prey to eat?” “We’re fine mom… please stop worrying so much, we’re not kits.” Whirlpaw said, embarrassed as the other apprentices were watching. “Do you think she will always be like this, even when we become warriors?” Vortexpaw whispered in Whirlpaw’s ear. Whirlpaw let out a tiny shiver of the thought. “Imagine if one of us becomes the leader and she asks us this many questions. Great Starclan! That would be scary.” Vortexpaw continued. Oceanspray’s ear twitched. “I heard that! I check on you because you are my children. You know I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you.” Oceanspray said with compassion. “Well anyway, I think Laketail and Steampelt are calling you two to go on a hunting patrol with them.” Oceanspray started to turn around. “Okay.” Whirlpaw mewed. Finally she’s done yapping! “Hey Vortexpaw, do you think our father ever had to deal with Oceanspray? I mean seriously, she talks way too much!” “That reminds me of someone…” Vortexpaw said playfully, while glancing towards his sister. “But I don’t know about our father. Oceanspray always told us stories about him and how great he is. I wonder what his name was.” Vortexpaw said thoughtfully. Whirlpaw had already begun to walk off with the hunting patrol. “Hey, wait up!” Vortexpaw scrambled on his feet towards them, heading into the woods.

Chapter 2, Swimming Lessons
A tiny mouse scurried away among the vibrant leaves of Newleaf. “Keep your tail down when hunting, Whirlpaw. Also, you should keep your back straight.” Laketail said, his golden fur sparkling in the sunlight. His apprentice Blubberpaw, and Steampelt’s apprentice, Sharkpaw, had already caught a plump vole each. “Mousedung! I won’t let another one get away so easily!” Whirlpaw enthusiastically said. Sharkpaw noticed Vortexpaw staring up, and admiring the slowly rolling clouds. “Hello? Vortexpaw, are you still there? Sharkpaw pawed at Vortexpaw. Vortexpaw leaped back a tail-length. “Oh, sorry. I was just wondering how the clouds would feel if we were able to walk on them.” “I don’t think you can walk on a cloud. You would probably fall through them. Anyways, you should probably get to hunting so Steampelt doesn’t get mad at us.” Vortexpaw nodded in agreement and stepped deeper into the scattered trees of Torrentclan. He stopped by the river to look at the tasty looking fish. “Are you sure you want to go in there? It’s probably cold in there!” Whirlpaw said, making Vortexpaw almost fall into the river. “Why not? Besides, it wouldn’t hurt to learn how to swim before having a mentor.” Vortexpaw hopped in the water, shivering at the ice-cold chill. He began to use his paws to swim around. “Hey, try it out, it’s not so bad once you get used to it.” Vortexpaw caught a few fish while in the water and put them on the shore. Whirlpaw looked uneasy, and reluctantly joined in swimming with her brother. “Help! I’m drowning! Help!” Whirlpaw screamed. Vortexpaw swam over to his sister, who was standing with her belly fur slightly touching the water. “You’re not even fully in! Come on, just let your paws guide you!” Whirlpaw moved slowly in and began to swim. She looked like she got used to it and began catching a few fish of her own to show the rest of the hunting patrol. As Vortexpaw was swimming around, his eyes clouded, and he fell into an unshakeable trance. “Huh? Where did you go, Whirlpaw?” Vortexpaw said, as he stood on the shore, next to where he and his sister were swimming. He thought he was still conscious. A white tom came and padded up to him. “Hello Vortexpaw, it’s been a while.” The white cat said. “Who are you? And where is my sister?” “She’s still swimming and she is about to rescue you from being drowned. Sorry for appearing to you while you were in the water.” The white cat said apologetically. For some reason, this white cat seemed familiar, almost as if Vortexpaw knew him. “Okay… So why exactly are we here?” “I was getting to that. Vortexpaw, beware, the ocean will avoid your presence and the fish will separate you from the truth. They will give you lies, but you will know in your heart what is right. Do not worry though, your sister will remain with you and trust you.” The white cat said while slowly disappearing. He walked up to Vortexpaw and give him a lick on the head. Vortexpaw looked surprised. He seems so familiar… He thought. The white cat faded away and Vortexpaw appeared on the shore by the river, with Whirlpaw standing above him. “You mousebrain! Why did you stop swimming?” Whirlpaw mewed harshly. Laketail, Steampelt, and their apprentices came out of the open forest. “What happened?!” Steampelt asked, her voice cracking with worry. “It’s okay, I just fell into the river, but Whirlpaw saved me.” Whirlpaw looked at him awkwardly. “Wow! Look at all of the fish you two caught!” Laketail said. “We should head back to camp now, it’s starting to get dark. Let’s go Blubberpaw!” The cats picked up their prey and started back towards their camp. Whirlpaw and Vortexpaw’s fur started to dry off in the falling sun. “Please don’t do that again!” Steampelt said to the two cats. “Oceanspray would get so angry at me and Laketail for not watching over you.” “It’s okay now. You should’ve seen Vortexpaw swim in the water. He became a fish himself!” Whirlpaw joked. Steampelt’s eyes widened with amazement. “You know, Oceanspray is a great swimmer as well. She fought the evil cat, Cut, of chaosclan, even while underwater, during the war. Her and Runningfur –er well, now Runningstar, were the absolute best team.” Steampelt’s eyes showed with wonder. Vortexpaw remembered the huge war that his mother always told him about that had happened between the combined clan, Furyclan, and Chaosclan. He and Whirlpaw weren’t born then, but Oceanspray described the battle with great detail that it seemed like they were actually in it. The cats arrived at camp and Riverleap already assigned a sunset border patrol. Whirlpaw and Vortexpaw shared a fish together and then went off into the apprentice’s den to get some sleep. ******** It was night and the moon shone with a great brightness. “We can’t tell them who their real father is! What if they become angry because he left? They have his blood. And yours too, Oceanspray! They could probably destroy the entire forest!” Fishstar mewed with concern. “I understand that Fishstar, but it’s wrong for them not to know who their father is! They might become angry if we don’t tell them and lie to them!” Oceanspray retorted. Fishstar looked deep in thought. “Maybe… but please Oceanspray, they’re not ready for the truth. You know how young apprentices are! Besides, we have a gathering tomorrow. We’ll make an agreement with Darkleaf then.” Fishstar said, dismissing Oceanspray from being inside the Leader’s den. Oceanspray knew it was wrong. I’m sorry Vortexpaw and Whirlpaw…

Vortexpaw arose from his sleep. Today is the gathering! He told himself. The other apprentices had already left out of the den. He stepped outside and let the warm wind wash over him, covering him with tempting scents of prey that lurked in the forest. He walked toward the fresh-kill pile to get a small mouse. “Vortexpaw! Come over here, I already have a fish for us to share.” Whirlpaw called out while sitting next to Sharkpaw. Vortexpaw padded over to them and sat down to enjoy the large fish that he caught last sunrise. “I hope we’re chosen to go to the gathering!” Sharkpaw excitedly mewed. “I want to see other cats from different clans!” “I’m not sure if I’ll able to go.” Vortexpaw despondently said. “I almost drowned in the river yesterday.” “But you still caught a lot of fish for the clan. I’m sure you’re still a valid pick!” Whirlpaw replied while chewing down her last mouthful. She got up. “Well, Baypool told me that I had to go get some more clean moss for the nursery. I am so glad that we have no elders yet! I don’t want to take out any ticks, yuck!” She began to walk towards the camp entrance. “See ya, Vortexpaw!” “Hey, hold up! I’ll help you clean out the nursery!” Sharkpaw abruptly said. Vortexpaw stared at him. Why does he want to come with her all of a sudden? Vortexpaw shrugged the thought away and decided to get ready for the gathering. He noticed Oceanspray walking towards the leader’s den with a worried expression. What’s wrong? He padded up to Oceanspray who seemed lost in her own world. She quickly turned around. “Oh, hey Vortexpaw, how are you?” “I am doing fine, where were you headed to? Can I help?” “Um, sorry Vortexpaw, but Fishstar says this is pretty urgent. By the way, where is Whirlpaw? Fishstar says she might take her to the gathering tonight.” Vortexpaw’s eyes lit up. So she has a chance, but what about me? He thought. “Baypool had her clean out the nursery along with Sharkpaw. I’m sure she’ll be excited about going to the gathering!” Vortexpaw shifted his paws uncomfortably, wanting to change the subject. He couldn’t help but think about the prophecy that the white cat gave him. The ocean will avoid your presence and the fish will separate you from the truth. The words still rang throughout his mind clearly. Oceanspray stared at her son, she must have sensed that he wanted to ask something. “What’s on your mind?” Oceanspray asked full of concern. “Um, I was just wondering… well it’s about my father. Where is he and what was his name?” Oceanspray froze up. “U-Uh, well he’s somewhere else right now and his name is, uh…” She looked for the words to say. “Well I can’t really remember right now because Fishstar has been putting me through lots of stress. I can’t remember from the top of my head you know.” Vortexpaw thought he sensed a slight edge in her tone, as if she was bothered. He decided not to ask any more questions and then walked off towards the hunting patrol who was just about to leave. What was so urgent for Oceanspray? Surely she couldn’t have forgotten her own mate’s name? He decided to go hunting with the exiting patrol. ******** Vortexpaw got back from hunting and Sharkpaw and Whirlpaw had just finished making the nursery comfortable for Divefur and her kits. The sun was going down slowly. He ran up to his sister who looked exhausted. “Hey guess what! Fishstar said that you have a chance of going to the gathering!” “Really?! I hope I do get to go, I really want something different to do than these small apprentice tasks around the camp.” “All cats gather beneath the Highbranch for a clan meeting!” Fishstar called. All of Torrentclan began to gather around, knowing what would be announced. “I’ve decided who shall go to the gathering! The first will be Whirlpaw.” Whirlpaw’s eyes brightened. “Then we shall have Laketail, Oceanspray, Sharkpaw, and Baypool.” Where is my name? Did she call me already? Vortexpaw thought. Riverleap, the clan deputy, whispered something in Fishstar’s ear. “Oh sorry, and also Vortexpaw! That will be all for now. The rest of the clan can go about their regular duties and stay on guard.” Fishstar leaped down from the tree, signaling with her tail for them all to start heading towards the island where the gathering was held. They headed out of the rocky entrance of the camp and trekked through the forest, around Flashclan territory and to the island. The moon hung high above them and shone with splendor on the traveling cats. Vortexpaw stretched out his front paws, showing his muscular body. “Oh you’re cool aren’t you?” Whirlpaw teased. “Stop showing off!” Vortexpaw looked indignant, but kept following the leader. The cats scrambled over the slippery log towards the island with their claws unsheathed so that they wouldn’t fall. Whirlpaw slipped and almost fell, but Sharkpaw caught her by the scruff. “Thank you Sharkpaw.” Whirlpaw mewed softly. “No problem. I’m always willing to help a clanmate.” And Whirlpaw thought I was trying to be cool?! Vortexpaw thought. They arrived on the other side of the log and saw the other cats who had already been there. The scents all mingled together, causing Vortexpaw to twitch his nose. The cats of Torrentclan began to settle down and form groups with the other clans to talk with. He noticed Oceanspray and a massive black tabby together, looking as if they were discussing something very important. The black cat’s fur began to bristle for a little but then settled back down. Then they padded over together in front of Vortexpaw and Whirlpaw, sticking close together. “Hey Whirlpaw and Vortexpaw! This is Darkleaf. He fought against Terror during the war.” Oceanspray said cheerfully. “Hi, it’s nice to meet you!” Whirlpaw said to Darkleaf. Vortexpaw felt a sentimental emotion come from Darkleaf. Why is he staring at me? He thought. Darkleaf must’ve just realized what he had been doing and began to speak. “Oh uh, sorry. You two remind me of a close friend I had.” Darkleaf uttered. “Vortexpaw, Whirlpaw, I have something to tell you…” Oceanspray looked embarrassed. “Darkleaf is your father!” Whirlpaw looked shocked. Darkleaf tilted his head sideways at Oceanspray, as if he were confused too, but then quickly turned back towards them. “Sorry, I took forever to tell you two. I just thought that the truth should wait, since he’s from another clan and all…” Oceanspray mewed. Fishstar stood a few tail-lengths away, and she obviously heard them. Shouldn’t Fishstar be furious? The three leaders began to leap on to the highest branch of the tree in the center of the gathering. Darkleaf decided to go back to his side of the island, next to a gray she-cat with a black stripe along her spine. She looked more attached to Darkleaf than Oceanspray did. The leaders began to speak. The cats began to settle down. Earthstar was the first to speak. “All is well in Skullclan. We have new apprentices and kits, and Shadownose, our medicine cat is currently training an apprentice. That will be all.” Earthstar stepped back. Runningstar began to speak. This is the cat that fought along with my mother during the war! Vortexpaw thought. “Everything is fine here in Flashclan as well. Sprintstar went to be with Starclan a few moons ago, so I have become the new leader.” Some of the Flashclan cats began to cheer for her. Runningstar stepped back and let Fishstar speak. “Prey is running abundantly here in Torrentclan. Divefur has two kits who will be apprenticed soon, and our apprentices are learning well.” Fishstar finished. The leaders jumped down from the branch and began to head back to their own camp. “Well, it was nice coming out here to see everyone!” Whirlpaw said happily.

Hmmm, I'm curious about the Darkleaf-Oceanspray thing. I wonder...
I have some ideas about the prophecy, though. I hope Sharkpaw won't be a traitor.

Chapter 4, Darkness
Vortexpaw appeared in a cold and empty void. He could hear sad, terrified, cries of despair and hurt coming from somewhere. His belly churned at the horrid sounds of the cries that he heard, but couldn’t make out what they were saying. Deep down he felt a sharp pinch of loneliness and a feeling of rage. He padded up slowly, not knowing what lie ahead of him. He blindly crashed into an invisible wall that contained a cat that mirrored his every move. He moved in closer to realize that it just wasn’t any cat, but it was himself but in a more sinister appearance. He was the one making the cries. He stared deep into the fierce eyes of his reflection and then suddenly, his reflection self had become a huge dark brown tabby with bloody matted fur and fiery green eyes. The brown tom began to speak, but his voice sounded like it was coming from a distance. “Vortexpaw… such a young and strong cat. You are headstrong and brave, why would you want to spend your time in Torrentclan? Do you really want to stay in the clan with Oceanspray, the one who claims that Darkleaf is her mate? You know deep down that that is a lie, which leads me to the question…” He paused and then spoke again. “If you cannot trust your mother, why trust your clan? They could all be against you, and you know it too.” “I…I don’t know whether or not Oceanspray is lying to me or not, but I know for sure that my clan is not all a part of this! Just who are you anyway?!” Vortexpaw said with his fur bristling, ready to pounce. “Me…? I am what you see in front of you. A cat just like you, who knows the truth about who your real father is. If you want to know, come to the cave that has been cut to shreds.” The dark tabby said. “Cave that that has been cut to shreds? I don’t know where that is or who you are! I am loyal to my clan, and even if they are lying to me, I will find out why!” Vortexpaw’s amber eyes shined with rage. “You will find out where that cave is later, once you learn more about the war that happened moons ago.” The dark tabby said while slowly fading away. “The war…? I already know what happened, Oceanspray and Runnningstar defeated Cut, Darkleaf and Earthstar fought Terror. What more is there to know?” Vortexpaw came up with an idea. He remembered a few cats from Torrentclan speaking about the war while he was doing his apprentice duties. There was a battle that had taken place after Cut and Terror were killed, but who were the ones fighting? I will find out the truth!Vortexpaw woke up abruptly out of his sleep. He saw Whirlpaw was comfortably curled up in her nest with her tail wrapped around her paws. She mumbled something in her sleep and then flipped over on her side. “Still sleeping long again?” Riverleap impatiently said through the brambles that covered the den’s entrance. “Come on, Fishstar is calling for a clan meeting right now.” The four apprentices got up out of their den, while Whirlpaw blindly walked around, wiping sleep from her eyes. She crashed into a thick bramble. “Mousedung!” Her eyes opened, she was fully awake now. “Are you okay?” Sharkpaw asked. Whirlpaw nodded and then padded out towards the Highbranch to see what the meeting was about. Why was Sharkpaw being so nice to her? Vortexpaw followed the other three apprentices and found himself in the middle of the camp, staring at Fishstar who sat atop the tree from which she spoke. The sun let out a warm and comforting light, but it made it difficult for Vortexpaw to see Fishstar clearly. “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath here for a clan meeting!” Fishstar called out, as every warrior and apprentice began to settle down. Vortexpaw could see the kits bounding over to see what was happening. “I think it is time for our kits to be made apprentices. Vaporkit! From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Vaporpaw.” Various cats cheered Vaporpaw’s name. The gray she-cat looked excited and proud. She shyly glanced at Vortexpaw and then quickly looked away. “Finkit! From this day on, you shall be called Finpaw.” The cats cheered her name also. “I also have a few more announcements. As of now, Vortexpaw’s mentor will be Oceanspray and Whirlpaw’s mentor will be Baypool.” Fishstar paused, as if she wasn’t sure what to say. “This will be a one-time–special-occasion, Seabreeze will have two apprentices, Vaporpaw, and Finpaw. This is due to the fact that we only have a few warriors to be able to mentor all of our new apprentices.” Seabreeze, a brown she-cat with blue eyes, looked overwhelmed, but still confident. She made her way to her two new apprentices who excitedly mewed at her. Whirlpaw looked extremely happy for some reason. “What are you so excited about, Whirlpaw?” Vortexpaw asked. “New apprentices means less work for us!” Whirlpaw snorted. “True, I will definitely enjoy it too.” “Hey, you have Oceanspray as your mentor. How do you feel?” Whirlpaw curiously mewed. “It’s kind of awkward, but I guess I’ll be more comfortable since she’s our mother.” Vortexpaw shifted lightly on his paws. Oceanspray joined her new apprentice, and she actually looked happy now. “Hi Vortexpaw! As your mentor, I will teach you all that I know, so that you just might become a better warrior than me!” Oceanspray joked. Vortexpaw looked embarrassed. Whirlpaw joined her new mentor Baypool. He was a pale gray tom with brown eyes, who looked like someone just swiped across his pelt. “Don’t worry about my appearance, Whirlpaw. I’m not actually that mean.” Baypool said soothingly in a raspy voice. Fishstar spoke again. “That will be all for now.” She leaped down and went back into her den.” “So are you ready to learn how to properly hunt?” Oceanspray asked. Vortexpaw snorted and turned away, trying to cover his embarrassment. His eyes clouded again, like it did by the river a few sunrises ago. He appeared in the camp, but no one was around except the white cat that he had seen before. “Vortexpaw! Whatever you do, do not go to that cave! If you do, you might end up o-“ The white cat was cut off as Vortexpaw was shaken back into consciousness by his mother. The vision had only happened for a heartbeat. “Hey! I thought you were ignoring me or something.” Oceanspray said, curiously studying her son. Come on, let’s go have some battle practice with Whirlpaw and Baypool at the training tunnel. Oceanspray bounded off towards the training tunnel, as Vortexpaw followed. I might end up what? What was the cat going to say? He thought.

Chapter 5, Whirlpaw’s Option
It was a bright and slightly cloudy day, and Whirlpaw felt a lot more experienced now that she had daily battle practices with the other apprentices, including her brother. Her powerful hind paws made it easy for her to maneuver around her opponent, giving her an occasional advantage depending on who her enemy was. She padded back inside the rocky entrance to Torrentclan camp with one fish and a couple of mice hanging from her jaws. She had just gotten back from hunting with her new mentor, Baypool. “You did a great job today Whirlpaw. I expect to see this type of work every day.” Baypool said, walking to the side of Whirlpaw. “You can get some rest right now, or join the hunting patrol that is about to leave. I’m sure you could learn something from the other apprentices and their mentors.” Baypool encouraged. Rest? I feel energized right now! I could probably jump all the way to the top of Flashclan’s mountains! Whirlpaw thought with energy surging through her paws. “I guess I’ll join the hunting patrol. What will you do Baypool?” Whirlpaw asked her new mentor. “Ehhh, I got a few errands to do right now. Lots of planning is needed at the moment.” Baypool said warily. Whirlpaw tilted her head sideways at him, wondering what he was jabbering on about. “Okay, bye Baypool!” Whirlpaw dashed off to join Sharkpaw and the other apprentices and their mentors who were going on the hunting patrol. Whirlpaw saw his brother, Vortexpaw, who was having a conversation with the new apprentice Vaporpaw. The dark gray she-cat let out a mrrow of laughter at something Vortexpaw had said. The two seemed to get along well. Seabreeze looked like she was having a difficult time keeping up with Vaporpaw and Finpaw who were constantly moving about. Sharkpaw stifled a yawn and padded beside Whirlpaw. “Hi Sharkpaw!” Sharkpaw looked exhausted. “Hey Whirlpaw, what have you been up to?” “I just got back from hunting with Baypool! At first I thought he would be a stick in the mud, but he is actually a pretty good mentor. How is Steampelt?” “She’s fine.” He said bluntly. “Although, she’s been pushing me really hard lately. I am so tired right now.” Whirlpaw stared at him sympathetically and silently padded to the side of him. They got deeper in the forest and began to hunt and had caught some large fish, mice, and a couple of voles. They returned to camp as the sun began to sink back down into the endless sky filled of fluffy clouds. Whirlpaw began to feel tired, and she saw the sunset patrol begin to leave to mark the borders. She picked up a small fish, gobbled it down and then went into the apprentice den to get some sleep. “Whirlpaw… come closer…” A soothing voice called out. She looked around, and then finally spotted a patch of white fur behind a thick set of brambles. She rushed through them and found a white cat. “Ah, finally you’ve come.” The white cat sat down and wrapped his tail comfortably around his soft, furry paws. “Come, take a seat with me.” He said while setting down a plump thrush in front of them to share. Whirlpaw couldn’t help but feel a strong radiating aura of friendly love coming from the white cat. “Who are you?” Whirlpaw half said to herself. The white cat seemed to disregard the question. Whirlpaw stared at him, waiting for an answer, and began to grow impatient. “Don’t worry, I’m not ignoring you, I just believe that that is not entirely important right now. I’ve came to warn you about an upcoming quarrel that can be prevented, if you follow what I say.” Whirlpaw lifted her ears up to listen carefully. “Beware of the fallen fur, with it, the blood of many might flow over because of a misunderstanding.” The white cat said while slowly disappearing. Whirlpaw was confused about what just happened, but she tried her best to remember the words spoken by this seemingly familiar cat. Whirlpaw then woke up in the middle of the night. A small paw was prodding her in the side, trying to get her awake. “I’m up. What is it Sharkpaw?” Sharkpaw looked startled for a few seconds but then his fur began to lie flat. “Do you want to come out with me to the forest? I heard it looks really beautiful at night, and you can see the fish clearly at the bottom of the river.” Whirlpaw became deep in thought, but then got up despite being extremely tired. She nodded toward Sharkpaw who signaled with his tail to follow him. The two walked together into the forest together, knowing that no one was watching them except Starclan above. ******** The sun rose high into the bright sky. The scattered clouds had finally parted, but Whirlpaw and Sharkpaw were nowhere to be found in the den. Vortexpaw looked nervously around for his sister and the brown tabby tom. He rushed out into the camp towards the rocky entrance of the camp when he suddenly heard pawsteps hurdling towards him. It was Whirlpaw. “Help! A badger attacked Sharkpaw and I! I don’t know where Sharkpaw went, but I believe he could still be safe.” Whirlpaw mewed while gasping for air. Her fur was bloody and matted, as if she were slashed severely, several times. Tinystripe, Torrentclan’s medicine cat came out of his den and had Vortexpaw help him carry her into his den where he then treated her wounds.

Chapter 6,Void
Vortexpaw was deep in sleep. He had had a long day after what happened to Whirlpaw and Sharkpaw. He appeared in a open plain along with Vaporpaw. The dark gray she-cat’s light hazel eyes glistened in the sunlight. She didn’t say anything to him but signaled for him to follow her off into the tall grass that blew rhythmically in the cool wind. She kept running until she came across a large chasm where there was a white cat standing on the other side. Vaporpaw turned around to face Vortexpaw and then she looked deep in sadness. Vortexpaw felt a strong pressuring feeling that came upon him, like he was to make some important decision. The white cat on the other side of the chasm stared at Vortexpaw judgingly, waiting for his next move. He sensed there was something dreadful inside of the chasm that tried to pull him in. Vaporpaw stood in front of him with her head down, silently trying to tell Vortexpaw something important. He stepped up, feeling like life and death could be controlled through his paws. He jumped across the chasm towards the white cat, only to find that he missed the ledge by a tail-length. He fell deep into the chasm into a dark and mysterious void. He had been here before. “Come closer, young Vortexpaw…” He heard a deep voice calling. “I can give you power if you wish. Just let me touch you…” Vortexpaw recognized the voice. It was the dark brown tabby he saw in another dream, but now he was nowhere to be seen. The dark tabby appeared in front of him. “Come on, don’t be afraid of me, I know you want it.” But I’m a good cat. Vortexpaw thought. I can’t trust him.“I think I’ll pass!” Vortexpaw spat, his fur bristling. He lunged toward the dark warrior with his paws extended. He felt a profound power burst into his paws as he shattered the bones of the brown warrior. What was this all about? Vortexpaw began to pad away when he heard the warriors voice. “Heheheh… you know you cannot kill me, I am in your dream.” “If I can beat you here, then I am more than sure that I can beat you wherever you are outside of this dream!” A light began to fill the void, and Vortexpaw saw the white cat pulling him out by his tail. Vortexpaw saw Vaporpaw severely wounded and her bright red blood dripped on the stones. “Vaporpaw, noooo!” The white cat shook his head at Vortexpaw. “Why did you do it Vortexpaw? I warned you!” Then, Vortexpaw woke up with a start and glanced around the den, only to see Vaporpaw and Whirlpaw curled up beside them. I don’t ever want to hurt them! He thought.

Chapter 7, Revealing
Vortexpaw lied under a short, shady, willow tree, trying to avoid the scorching sun. Normally he would have enjoyed letting the sun warm his pelt but today it was way too hot. Newleaf was coming to an end, and Greenleaf was sure to bring a harsh heat. He curled up comfortably, tucking his paws in while watching the clouds roll by. He couldn’t help but think of all that was happening, like his encounter with the white cat who he probably knew but couldn’t remember, or his dreams of the dark brown tabby that visited him occasionally. And most of all, he absolutely had no idea if Darkleaf was his father or not. The fish will separate you from the truth… He thought. What fish was the cat talking about? There are no fish that can speak! So many thoughts filled his mind all at once, he decided to push the thoughts back in his mind. He saw Oceanspray with a few fish in her jaws that she dropped in the fresh-kill pile. He rose to his paws, ready to go training with his mother who was also his mentor. “Hey!” Vortexpaw called across the camp. Oceanspray seemed to not notice him. “Hello, Oceanspray! Are we going to go hunting today?” He called out louder while walking towards her. Oceanspray nervously glanced at Vortexpaw with a fearful and sad look in her eye, like something prevented her from speaking to her son. She bounded over to the leaders den where Fishstar rested. What’s wrong? What did I do? He thought to himself. He padded over to the nursery to visit Divefur, who was sitting on a soft patch of grass, talking to Vaporpaw, her daughter. She was almost ready to resume her warrior duties again. “O-oh, hi Vortexpaw!” Divefur said, sounding frightened. “Vaporpaw and I were just talking about how well you and Whirlpaw hunt. It’s really amazing!” Divefur nervously looked at her paws, and then back up, her dark yellow eyes focusing on him. “You also swim really well for a beginner!” She continued. Why was she giving him so many compliments? “Thank you, Divefur. So, are you ready to regain your title as a warrior?” Vortexpaw asked. “Yes, it’s boring here being the only queen. I want to escape this den and see Laketail, my mate.” She said in a more relaxed tone. At least I’m sure that she’s being honest about who her mate is. He thought. “Vortexpaw!” a voice came from outside the nursery. Vortexpaw turned around and darted off to see who it was, almost forgetting to say bye to the two she-cats. “Bye, Vaporpaw and Divefur!” He called out while dashing out of the nursery, coming to face his sister. “Oh, hey Whirlpaw! What’s up?” Whirlpaw’s dark blue eyes shown with a strong seriousness. “Vortexpaw, I don’t know what’s going on… Every cat in Torrentclan is acting strange around me.” She said quickly. “I think they believe that I have killed Sharkpaw!” Her voice cracked with worry. “Calm down Whirlpaw. Whatever is going on, Starclan will show us why it’s happening.” He replied encouragingly. “But I have noticed Divefur and Vaporpaw acting out of the ordinary. That means that they aren’t scared of you because of what happened to Sharkpaw, but it’s something else that is going on – something that is so obvious.” Whirlpaw began to relax. A loud call came from the Highbranch. “Let all cats gather beneath the Highbranch for a clan meeting!” Fishstar called. Every cat came out of their dens and from the forest to see what was happening. Whirlpaw and Vortexpaw made their way over to the center of the camp where the Highbranch was. “As you all have heard, Sharkpaw has gone missing. We do not know if he is dead, and because of that, we will send out a patrol to go get some evidence about his whereabouts.” Fishstar glanced fearfully at Whirlpaw and then looked away. “On that day, it is known that Whirlpaw and Sharkpaw were attacked by a badger, so be sure to look out for any scent of badger or even fox, just to be safe! Now…” Fishstar’s eyes swept across the crowd. “Riverleap, Oceanspray, Baypool, and Whirlpaw will go out to investigate the scene. That will be all for now.” Fishstar leaped down from the tall tree. Aw, so she didn’t pick me… Vortexpaw thought. “Alright, are you three ready?” Riverleap said. “We should get a move on before it gets dark. Fishstar already agreed to set up a sunset patrol for later while I’m gone. Okay, let’s go.” Riverleap led the way out of the rocky entrance into the forest. “Bye Vortexpaw!” Whirlpaw called out. ******** Whirlpaw’s PerspectiveThe four cats padded into the forest, ignoring the tempting sounds of mice scurrying across the forest floor. They leaped across the Torrentclan river, going to a large pond where reeds swayed in the harsh wind. “So Whirlpaw, what exactly were you and Sharkpaw doing out so late at night” Baypool questioned. “Well…” Whirlpaw began. “We came out to see the beautiful pond that shimmers in the moonlight. But we were rudely interrupted by a badger that attacked me, and then Sharkpaw tried to save me, but he ended up getting badly hurt. I lunged at the badger and cut across his body, but the badger snapped at my ear and so Sharkpaw decided to fight the badger solo because he didn’t want me to get hurt. After they battled for a little a while, I lost consciousness and when I woke back up, I saw they were gone!” Baypool appeared deep in thought and then continued to follow Riverleap. They finally arrived at the pond that bordered between Skullcan and Torrentclan. Riverleap padded up to a patch of bloody brown fur. Beware of the fallen fur, with it, the blood of many might flow over because of a misunderstanding. Whirlpaw remembered the white cat’s words. Riverleap sniffed for any other scents of Sharkpaw and accidentally stepped over on Skullclan’s territory. “Hey! What do you think you’re doing? A deep and strong voice bellowed. A huge tabby came from behind the dark trees of Skullclan. It was Darkleaf, and his fur bristled with fury. “Oceanspray? I thought the agreement was only for the gathering!” He spat. Oceanspray looked uncomfortable. What agreement? Whirlpaw wondered. “It’s not about that, Darkleaf! We are trying to search for a cat that has gone missing, have you seen him?” “If you are asking if we have seen a cat on our territory, you are correct! Just take a look at your deputy!” Darkleaf snarled. Riverleap backed into his territory, trying to avoid any more conflict. “But honestly, one of our cats has gone missing too.” Darkleaf continued. “And I think your cat has took our cat!” Baypool looked confused at what was happening in front of his eyes. “Wait!” Whirlpaw shouted. All of the cats turned to look at her. “What agreement did you and Oceanspray have?” She asked. Oceanspray let out a sigh. “I’m sorry Whirlpaw. We lied… Your real father is…” Riverleap signaled to Baypool with his tail for something. Baypool looked startled and began to spoke. “Whirlpaw, I am your father…” (heheh)

Chapter 8, Run Vortexpaw!
Whirlpaw’s face was filled with disbelief. She turned around back into the forest not knowing where she was going with tears streaming down her face. She didn’t care what happened anymore, she just wanted everyone to stop lying to her. While running, she tripped over a root that stuck above the undergrowth and skidded on the forest floor, causing a painful gush of blood to come from her hind leg. I don’t care, it’s just a small scratch! She got up and kept running into the distance. Finally, she found herself outside of the camp near a small puddle of water. She held her head down low, letting large waves of tears trickle down her nose into the puddle. The pain in her leg had left her, but the pain in her heart still pierced her like a thorn. Why does my own mother have to lie to me? She thought. She felt a furry pelt brush against her. She turned to look who it was and saw her brother, Vortexpaw. “Whirlpaw?! What’s wrong?” He asked full of concern. “What happened? Is it about Sharkpaw?” “No! It’s not about Sharkpaw! Who cares about Sharkpaw anyway?” Doesn’t she miss Sharkpaw? Why be so hostile? Vortexpaw thought. “Vortexpaw… Darkleaf isn’t our father, supposedly Baypool is! Heck, Starclan knows if even Oceanspray is our mother or not!” Vortexpaw’s face darkened, filling with gloom. “What…” Whirlpaw sensed an evil aura emanating from him. Maybe I shouldn’t have told him so soon… She thought to herself. She saw her brother’s fur begin to bristle and he let out a vicious snarl. “Vortexpaw?” Whirlpaw said with fear. Whirlpaw never seen her brother this angry before, it was as if he was a different cat. Had he been holding in his feelings all of this time? Vortexpaw’s fur began to lie flat again, as he took a deep and refreshing breath, but she could still sense a faint cry of sadness within him. “That’s it… I’ve had enough… I’m sorry Whirlpaw but I’m going to leave Torrentclan.” Whirlpaw’s eyes filled with shock. Was this her same brother? This is all Oceanspray’s fault! She thought. “But you can’t leave! We need you! Together we can find out the truth!” Whirlpaw cried. “I’m sorry Whirlpaw, it’s too confusing to tell what is real and what isn’t. I don’t know if I’ll return…” Vortexpaw’s eyes turned to gaze up at the clouds. “But if you want, you can come with me.” Whirlpaw shifted uneasily. “I-I can’t, I’m sorry.” Whirlpaw went up to her brother and gave him an affectionate lick on his head. “Please don’t go… You know Vaporpaw will also miss you too. You were her best friend.” Vortexpaw turned away, his eyes glassy and filled with small tears. “Forgive me Whirlpaw. I might return someday, but for now…” He slowly padded off into the forest, his slow walk suddenly becoming a fast sprint. Whirlpaw watched her brother dash off into the forest. That was it. He was gone now. Whirlpaw let out a bloodcurdling shriek and padded off back to camp. She went into her den and lay in her soft nest and closed her eyes, hoping that this was all a dream. ******** Vortexpaw appeared back at the Torrentclan river, where he and Whirlpaw caught their first fish. He was dreaming. He saw the white cat that always gave him advice and comfort. “Vortexpaw, please don’t leave Torrentclan.” The white cat spoke. “You’ll be adding more stress on Whirlpaw than she needs.” Vortexpaw furiously walked up to the white cat with his fur bristling and slashed across his pelt. The white cat looked at him sympathetically and then turned his back on him. “Fine Vortexpaw. If you wish to go on your own, then let it be so. But watch out, one who you treasure deeply will be greatly wounded by your own paws!” The white cat jumped up high into the air, going into the clouds. “Good job Vortexpaw… let it all out.” A dark voice called. “You have the power of an entire clan.” Vortexpaw knew who it was already and turned around to face the dark brown tabby. Vortexpaw abruptly woke up, and scrambled to his paws. The sun shone high above, and Greenleaf was just starting. He remembered that he had camped out in Flashclan territory in a makeshift den. He saw a lithe body move about surreptitiously between the fronds and trees. A large tortoiseshell she-cat appeared in front of him. Vortexpaw’s amber eyes shined against the bright sunlight. “Whitedove?” The cat called out. “It’s me Runningstar.” She mewed calmly. “You look smaller.” “Who’s Whitedove?” Vortexpaw retorted. He unsheathed his claws, ready to fight anyone. “And who are you?” Runningstar realized that it wasn’t who she thought it was and unsheathed her claws too. “I should be asking you that!” She spat. She darted towards Vortexpaw and knocked him over with a great speed. “No one comes on Flashclan territory uninvited!” She clawed at his fur continuously. Vortexpaw winced at the pain and rolled from underneath the large cat. He felt a huge power flowing throughout his paws. He quickly lunged at Runningstar and swiped out with his front paw. Runningstar ducked under and cut across his pelt. Vortexpaw snarled, ignoring the pain and toppled over Runningstar and pummeled her belly with his claws. He leaped over her and darted away up towards the mountains, leaving her behind. “I have no time for this!” He called over his shoulder and then continued to run up the mountains of Flashclan.

Chapter 9, Sharkpaw appears
Whirlpaw made her way into the clearing of the camp. She saw all of the cats sharing tongues with shocked expressions on their face. She decided to pick up a tasty looking vole and joined Vaporpaw who was silently eating alone. She plopped down on the soft grass and began to chew her food. Vaporpaw’s eyes were filled with a distant look, like she wasn’t even aware of what was going on. “Hi Whirlpaw.” Vaporpaw said quietly. Whirlpaw leaned in a little to hear her better. “So… how is everything?” Whirlpaw felt down too, who could she share her feelings with now that her brother is gone? He’ll return one day, I know it!“Well, if you disregard Sharkpaw and Vortexpaw leaving, then everything would be fine.” Whirlpaw replied. She heard Vaporpaw let out a small sigh. “Don’t worry Vaporpaw, I’ll get Vortexpaw back for sure!” Vaporpaw looked up at Whirlpaw with hope shining in her eyes. “Please do! He was my best friend!” Vaporpaw desperately pleaded. Vaporpaw chewed her last mouthful and got up along with Whirlpaw. “I’ll do whatever I can… Hey, did you hear what happened at the pond yesterday? Tension is beginning to rise between Skullclan and Torrentclan because they claim that the brown fur belongs to their missing Skullclan cat. I hope this doesn’t lead to another war…” Whirlpaw said, frightened. “That’s not good. I hope they find out whose fur it belongs to.” Vaporpaw added in. “Border patrol! Vaporpaw, Whirlpaw! You two will go along with Steampelt, Laketail, and Blubberpaw for sunset patrol.” Riverleap called across the middle of the camp. The cats gathered together and left out of the rocky entrance into the forest. ******** The cats finally came back after a hard day of patrolling. Vaporpaw and Blubberpaw went to the Apprentice’s den and Laketail and Steampelt went to their own den. Whirlpaw decided to stay behind and let the moon fill the forest with its radiant and bright glow. She padded back into the forest and went for a stroll. She could smell the delicious scents of prey, but was too tired to go hunting. She made her way back to the pond where she last saw Sharkpaw. Sharkpaw, why did you have to take it so seriously? She saw a brown figure drop from the tree above her, followed by a silver figure. It landed on their paws and stared fiercely at her. “Thinking about me? Sharkpaw said. The silver tabby beside him watched the two carefully. “Sharkpaw!” Whirlpaw said enthusiastically. Sharkpaw snorted. “Why be so excited now? You weren’t this excited when you broke my heart. I loved you…” Sharkpaw said, remembering what happened the night they went to the pond. “And then you said we got attacked by badgers.” He spat, his fur bristling. “Sharkpaw… you were a friend… and just a friend. You were my best friend too.” Whirlpaw replied, trying to comfort him. He turned his head away and let out a deep grunt. “Well anyways, this is my new friend, Gravelpaw. He left Skullclan because he has been getting dreams about a dark brown tabby that wants him. He is actually the son of Stoneheart, the old Skullclan warrior.” The silver tabby just glared at her. Sharkpaw continued, “I shall destroy all of Torrentclan soon. They will all be a sacrifice to the magnificent Deathshred.” Sharkpaw uttered. “And leaving my fur behind is just the start of my plan.” Sharkpaw and Gravelpaw turned away. “We’ll see you later Whirlpaw, we’ve got things to do.” They darted off into the forest. Whirlpaw looked shocked. He can’t destroy Torrentclan… can he?!

Chapter 10, Meeting
Vortexpaw trekked across the large rocky mountains. The scent of rain wafted through the air and clouds loomed overhead and darkened the area. His belly started to rumble. I better get something to eat. He looked around and finally spotted a large, tasty looking hawk. Food! He dashed across the rocky terrain and caught up with the huge bird. The bird must’ve sensed him because it started to take flight. It flapped its large wings, causing large gusts of wind that made it hard for Vortexpaw to run ahead. How do Flashclan cats deal with these birds? He leaped up into the air with his hind paws and latched onto the bird’s talons, sinking his teeth deep into it. The bird squawked in pain and irritation and flew slightly above the rocks, making Vortexpaw scrape against them harshly. Vortexpaw reached up with his forepaw at the bird’s belly and clawed with all of his might. The bird cawed and fell down quickly. Vortexpaw landed on top of it and stood proudly, feeling victorious. Now I can eat. Vortexpaw sat down and enjoyed having a fresh meal. The rocky ground underneath made him feel so distant from home. He started to feel sentimental. I miss sleeping in Torrentclan’s apprentice den, and being with at home with Whirlpaw and Vaporpaw. He thought sorrowfully. But if the whole clan will be against us, then why bother? He got up after finishing the last of the hawk and thought about what the dark brown tabby said. If you want to know, come to the cave that has been cut to shreds. What did that mean and what cave was it? Vortexpaw continued to pad over the mountain, when a yellow pelt aggressively knocked him to the side, causing Vortexpaw to skid over the rocks to a burning halt. “How dare you attack my mate, Runningstar!” The yellow cat roared. Vortexpaw rose to his paws, staggering to get up, “Who are you?!” “I am Sunhead, Flashclan’s deputy, and you’re not welcome here you Torrentclan cat!” “Torrentclan isn’t my clan anymore… I am a lone warrior seeking the truth.” Vortexpaw replied. “Tsch, you still don’t belong on Flashclan’s mountains!” He spat. Sunhead dashed towards Vortexpaw and sank his teeth deep into his leg. Vortexpaw was still tired from his battle with Runningstar last sunrise but he devised a plan. He let his body go limp and waited for Sunhead to begin to leave. Sunhead spat and backed away a tail-length. “Easy as hunting a mouse.” Vortexpaw began to get up to strike Sunhead, but the golden tom already had turned around and struck Vortexpaw fiercely across his face. Sunhead grabbed Vortexpaw by the scruff and lifted him up. “Time to teach you to respect your seniors!” Sunhead tossed Vortexpaw down into the ground and then jumped onto his back. He unsheathed his claws and raked across Vortexpaw who lie helplessly. Blood splattered across the rocks and rain had begun to fall lightly. Then, a brown tom plunged straight into Sunhead and sent him tumbling over. “Huh?” Sunhead was confused. The brown cat then pummeled Sunhead’s stomach with a great force that caused him to cough blood. He then sank his teeth into Sunhead’s shoulder, making him go unconscious. “A sacrifice for Deathshred!” The brown warrior said. He turned his gaze to look at Vortexpaw. “Vortexpaw, is that you? I am Sharkpaw, remember?” Vortexpaw looked at him curiously and then spoke, “Yes, I remember you. I thought you were attacked by a badger!” “No, Whirlpaw lied about that.” Sharkpaw said indignantly, trying not to continue the conversation. “Anyways, why are you here?” “I left Torrentclan. No one except my sister and Vaporpaw were trustworthy.” Vortexpaw said with a slight tone of sadness. “Why didn’t you join back?” “I will destroy all of Torrentclan to get revenge for what Whirlpaw did to me!” Sharkpaw bellowed. “And I have a friend to help me do it. Gravelpaw, come here!” A silver tabby padded over to join them. “Nice work Sharkpaw, we’ll use this Flashclan deputy for Deathshred.” Gravelpaw announced. Vortexpaw looked puzzled. “Who’s Deathshred?” “He is the one that called you, Vortexpaw, and also Gravelpaw. I decided to join so I can get revenge on Torrentclan.” Sharkpaw retorted. The dark brown tabby with bloody fur! Vortexpaw remembered him in his dreams. Sharkpaw and Gravelpaw gathered around Sunhead and began to chant Deathshred’s name. Suddenly, Sunhead got up and looked at them all. “Sharkpaw! This body isn’t strong enough! Find me another…” Deathshred said while in Sunhead’s body. Deathshred’s spirit left out of Sunhead. “Well that didn’t turn out well. Let’s go. Vortexpaw, are you coming?” Gravelpaw said in his deep voice. Vortexpaw was unsure of what to say. I came on my own to find the truth... What would I gain if I joined these two? Vortexpaw nodded his head and padded along with them.
